Recently , one of my sisters in my organization introduced me to a campaign called "She Can Be Both". I've participated by posting a collage of pictures that represent all that I believe to be , as a woman. Although I am a woman , I find it hard to conform to many societal norms of what is considered " ladylike" . In my friend and peer groups , I try not to insult others' beliefs but I am a firm believer that growing up should always include unlearning the patriarchal b.s that is taught.
I do not apologize in advance.
The She Can Be Both campaign has increased my self-awareness in that I've become more aware of the things I say and do to "protect" myself. Whether from judgement , abuse or manipulation a lot of what we do or don't is taught from a patriarchal standpoint that suggests what is gender appropriate. For example , a young lady shouldn't wear short , tight clothing because "it is in a mans nature to react" . Well I am here to say that just like any other human , men should be taught self control as well as respect regardless of what a woman is wearing. That idea alone and the idea that clothing can possibly provoke someone to rape you , breaks my heart.
Its extremely disheartening to know that you are criticized for doing what you love ...most of all , what makes you happy.
Sometimes I want to wear things that showcase my curves , and in the presence of elders I choose to cover those parts .
When I want to go out and dance , twerk , or whip (for those who know the dance) ,
When I want to get a little ratchet with my friends
When I want to sip tea
When I want to gulp Koolaid
When I want to listen to Fred Hammond
When I want to listen to Nicki Minaj
If I wake up tomorrow and become a bartender
Or I decide to drive Nascar
I CAN be anything I wish to be and so can you . Don not feel confined Do not have your individuality threatened due to societal "norms" . They are created to establish a limit to who you can and cannot be and ...she can be both.
